Christmas Wishes w/ Exciting News...

The Blessings of Peace
The Beauty of Hope
The Spirit of Love
The Comfort of Faith
May these be your gifts this Christmas Season.

For the Houston Rivers peace, hope, love, and faith are our gifts this season as we chose not to do traditional Christmas gift after Lee received some exciting news.

In November Lee applied for the IIE Travel Fellowship Award which grants IIE staff the opportunity to travel abroad to attend an international conference for the purpose of professional development.

Lee applied last year and unfortunately was not selected. This year, with a record number of applicants seeking the award, Lee was one of five recipients selected for 2013. The formal announcement is below:

We are excited for Lee as he is well deserving of this award. They say when you are married you become one, so Lee winning the travel fellowship is like me wining the travel fellowship. Naturally, I will be joining Rivers for the Eastern Europe trip. Also because I acted as his assistant, editor, and cheerleader during the entire process :)

Lee will be attending the European Association for International Education in Prague, Czech Republic:

We will also visit countries such as Hungary (Budapest), Austria, Slovakia, and possibly Poland.

We are super excited for this honor and are looking forward to fulfilling our dreams of traveling the world together. We will be able to check many countries off our "To Visit" list.

We love you all. Have a very Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from New York City!

The weather is brisk and the sun is bright
On this holiday morning.

I spent Christmas Eve with friends
At Red Rooster

And ended the night
Under a blanket on the sofa
Oliver the Chinchilla
(Yes, I am chinchilla-sitting)
Knawing on sticks in the background.

Today will be quiet.
Spent reflecting
And watching one of my favorite movies of all time
35 Shots of Rum.

I will laugh.
I will cry.
I will think of all of you
Celebrating in your homes all over the country
And my heart will be warmed.

Merry Christmas, family!

Love love and more love,
Harrison

Post-Thanksgiving Update: New York City

Hey y'all,

I hope that everyone is doing well post-Thanksgiving.

I have a few updates:

1. My proposal for THE LAST QUEEN OF CANAAN (AKA the sharecropping musical) was accepted. I am now the official book writer on the project.

Here is how the musical is described:

"Kay McKenna, an eager young writer hired by the WPA, travels to Virginia on a mission to collect narratives from former slaves. In Canaan, she meets Cora Skye, a sharecropper who still farms the land she worked as a slave. Each woman wants nothing more than to forget her past. But, in this deeply haunted and slowly healing South, secrets are unearthed, and past and present collide. THE LAST QUEEN OF CANAAN is a powerful tale of legacy and forgiveness with a rich, gospel-infused score."

2. I've worked up about 20 pages of material for BUT BEAUTIFUL (AKA the jazz monologue play) and Ron and I will be submitting it for approval to the Public Theater next week.

3. My play LOOK UPON OUR LOWLINESS has been nominated for the Terrence McNally New Play Award, which annually recognizes "a new play that celebrates the transformative power of art."

The weather in New York has been unseasonably warm. Fifties every day. Too hot for a coat
(in my opinion). Hopefully it will cool down soon and maybe even snow.

It was lovely being home for Thanksgiving. Thank you all for your love and encouragement and prayers. I probably would have stopped this writing thing ages ago if not for your support.

Much love,
Harrison

2nd round of Rivers

Houston Rivers have just arrived!
Waiting for Wichita Rivers later this morning
YEAH!!!

Friday, November 22, 2013

the package has arrived!

Grandma A has landed in Houston!
Jeff went in for mouth surgery earlier today.
Ouch!!

Getting her to the airport and settled went very smooth!
Thanks Har!

This Might Be Overkill...

...seeing as how I just posted yesterday, but I have some news.

An itemized list:

1. I was selected as a Fund for New Work recipient by Harlem Stage and the Jerome Foundation. I will receive grant funding to hire an artistic team [director, dramaturg and actors] to further develop my play, LYDIE, OR (S)HE WHO LOOKS INSIDE, AWAKES.

2. My play WHEN LAST WE FLEW will be workshopped by About Face Theatre Company in Chicago in late January.

3. My play AND SHE WOULD STAND LIKE THIS will be workshopped as part of the Drama League's Rough Draft Residency in late February. This piece is a collaboration with my friend and apartment-mate [and pretty fantastic director], David Mendizabal.

4. My play THE SEA & THE STARS is being read by Literary Managers at The Public, Second Stage, Lincoln Center Theater 3 and Williamstown Theatre Festival. Hopefully someone will love it!

That's all.
I have no more to report.

Happy Friday everyone!

Much love,
H

To Do or Not To Do...

So... I'm posting.

Kansas is rainy and cold. Unlike New York which was dry, blue skied and less cold. Good thing I like crappy weather.

I am here for Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. The only holiday I enjoy, really. I am happy to be home.

Happy for a many reasons--family, yes, of course, family, and good food. But also the slower pace and peace and quiet and no obligations.

Home is the perfect place to get things done.

My to-do list for the week:

1. An Act One outline for a musical entitled THE LAST QUEEN OF CANAAN

2. An outline for an adaptation of Geoff Dyer's novel BUT BEAUTIFUL for Ron Cephas Jones
(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0429171/)

3. First draft of a One Act Play entitled LENA, DOWN SOUTH for Ruby Thomas

4. Notes for a musical re-telling of SAMSON & DELILAH

5. An edit of my most recent play entitled THE SEA & THE STARS

Totally do-able.

In fact, I'm more excited now than I was before I typed the list. Energized even.

That's the Kansas effect.

Happy Thanksgiving indeed.

Grandma Azer to Houston

Here's the update : Grandma will be leaving from Manhattan tomorrow, Thursday, November 21.
Rena will be picking her up in Dallas, so that she can only have to take one flight. She checked the flights and she's off tomorrow so it works out for her to pick grandma up.

Thanks Lee & Q for offering to  pick up Grandma. Rena has the off so she's got it, not unless she changes her mind between now and tomorrow.

Grandma will stay down there with them at least until the middle of December. She has to come back to do her housing papers, so that she can keep her apartment.

In other news!

Harrison is here!!!!!

Lift Up Aunt Rena & Siddiq

Got word a couple of hours ago that uncle Siddiq is in the hospital. He had internal bleeding so they're doing exploratory surgery, they maybe done right now. Be sure to lift them up in prayer. They believe that the cancer has come back, not sure where.

Rena called pretty upset to Grandma Azer. We are looking into getting Grandma down to Texas.

Also be in prayer for Jeffrey. Because of his teeth being so bad, he will have to have all of them pulled next week. This is extra stress Rena to handle by herself.

I will try to keep you posted. Lee has been running point for us in Texas. He plans on going by the VA to see Siddiq and Rena and check on Jeffrey.

Hello Family Greetings from Junction City!

Hope all is well with everyone.  We are doing awesome here in the wondrous flint hills.  We enjoy our regular updates from everyone and look forward to hearing about all the exciting adventures everyone is having come Thanksgiving.

We have had many adventures of our own, however those updates can wait when we are all at the cabin.  One particular update that cannot wait though is Megan and I are.... well... a picture is worth a thousand words.

Update from the Houston Rivers 2.0

Hello Family,

I thought we would pitch in on the family updates. All is well in Houston, except that it is not really Autumn yet, so we are looking forward to having that for about a week or so.

We recently were in Louisville, KY for a business conference and spending time with our mentors. Lee has been busy traveling for work. The day we returned he was called to Austin, TX for a work-related emergency. The week before that we went to College Station, TX and spent the day on the A&M campus. Next week we are traveling to NYC. Lee heads out Sunday (work), and I join him on Tuesday (shopping and adventures).

Lee has been busy writing proposals and getting involved with a men's group both at our church and at Joel Osteen's church. He recently got a bike so he has been on biking adventures in Houston. He comes home muddy and with multiple scrapes and cuts.

I have been busy with volunteering with Big Brother/Big Sister, advocacy projects for domestic violence and human trafficking awareness months, training at the gym, joining book and social clubs and grudgingly completing my defensive driving (too many speeding tickets). I have been able to get a lot of reading in as well. I'm in love with my Kindle.

Of course we try to spend as much time together when he is not on the road. We took a painting class recently. That was fun. If anyone wants an original piece of artwork in their home, we have two available :) We spend our free time exploring Houston, growing our business, and reading.

In November we have a Leadership Conference out in Virginia, and then of course we will be making the drive up to the Midwest for the holidays. We are looking forward to spending time with everyone at the cabin.

Lee's only food request is apple pie with either A) whipped cream or B) vanilla ice cream.

We love you all. Have a fantastic weekend!!
~ The Houston Rivers

Thanksgiving Info

Thanks so much for the update 4.0!
The reservations have been made, so we are on for Thanksgiving!

It breaks down to 32.00 per person for the cabin.
If everyone could throw in 20.00 per couple or
10.00 per single- for food, that would take care of it.
What about menu choices?
Turkey Burgers anyone?

Quick Updates from Rivers 4.0

Hello Family and Greetings from Wichita!

I hope everyone is well! Since I do such a poor job touching base with everyone, I thought I would just send a quick update on the latest happenings for Rivers 4.0. October will be very busy for Ashley and I with various trips, projects and events taking place. Homecoming week at Friends University will be taking place from October 14 – 19, which will certainly keep Ashley busy! And the Grand Opening for the Kansas Leadership Center (our sister organization) will be taking place on the 14th so things have been very hectic around both the Foundation and the Center in preparation for that event.

Also of note, Ashley will be travelling for work to two meetings in the next two weeks. The first will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) Central Region Conference. She’ll be down there from October 3rd – 6th. And then after a short day-long respite, head east to St. Louis, Missouri to attend an International Student Arrival and Orientation Institute. I will be heading to Chapel Hill, North Carolina from October 24th – 26th for a special training in countering tobacco sale marketing and promotion in retail environments.

Other than that life continues to go well and we very much enjoy any downtime we can scrape up! We are loving our new home and learning more and more about each other! What all is happening in everyone else’s neck of the woods?

One final thought, I know it is still a ways off, but is there anything that needs to be done in preparation for Thanksgiving? Reservations or deposit funds needed or anything like that? Just want to make sure we plan accordingly J We are super excited to see everyone!  Any who, hope all is well!

Love you all!

Address Update

Hello my loved ones. With so many exciting things happening in the month of September, I sat down to send out cards and realized that some of us have transitioned and changed living spaces, and I am not currently updated on mailing addresses.

If everyone could post their addresses on this note, that would be so beneficial and helpful for future reference.

We miss you all like crazy, and look forward to reuniting in the next few months.

Devotional from Grandma Gerry

Grandma Gerry was asked to write a devotional for her church. Enjoy!

Day 60
August 14, 2013
3 John 1:1-8
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
As I read 3 John it reminded me of my grandfather Keele. Grandpa Keele was what they called an upstanding gentleman. His love for God was outstanding; he was a pillar of the community. He served as a church lay leader for many years and he was the first Black person on the school board.

In the early years he tutored many children in their home work because he  believed in a good education for all students. I'm sure he was much like Gaius.

My most unforgettable memory of him is when he was older, how he sat in church and many times cried just for being in God's house. My father died when I was four years old leaving my mother to raise a large family. Mom was always there for us and I
remember some of her words of wisdom  that I am sure she learned from grandpa. She taught us to be kind to others, and to help others when we could.

John wrote about "my children" because, as of a result of his preaching, he was the
spiritual father of many, including Gaius. Like John, you might say that grandpa was the spiritual father of many.

I believe that God wants us to leave a legacy, an example of how to live life in faith and love. Grandpa was a role model for me. Faith in God is the strength that I learned from him.

Rewind of an Old Post

wrote this in 2009. still true today....

longings

i'll admit it...sometimes life and our spouses can be a pain. hey, but so are we. i want Karl to be able to interpret what i need when i need it...doesn't happen....won't happen. i quickly forget that only God can really know me and "get" me. a lot of times i forget that.

i just went to a ladies night out at our church the other day. i really didn't want to be with a whole room of women, but i knew i needed to be there. anywho, at the meeting an equally wild woman shared a great message about passions and longings.

it just hit on all cylinders. she spoke about how our longings are good. not easy to deal with, but good, because it should cause us to remember that we are meant for more. and that's ok to realize we were meant for more. we just tend to get sidetracked and think that we have to pursue and possess those things we long for, thinking that they will fulfill us. you know the grass is always greener thing.

these longings are actually like holes in swiss cheese (now stay with me). the holes are meant to be there, just like our longings. these holes are put there by God, to draw us to Him, so that He can fill those holes. the more that we are meant for is more of Him.

the big wow for me came when she said that God allows Himself to be put in the same "holey" state. He longs to have fellowship with us. He longs for us to sit at His feet.
He desires that communion with us, but amazingly gives us the freedom to reject Him. wow! that means that God is longing for me, yet He remains unfulfilled. and i think that i have longings and passions unfulfilled!

ANYWHO....you are meant for more, i am meant for more. the people and situations around us are not the problem. changing people, jobs, locations etc will not stop the longings. the longings will not go away. longings are there to let us remember our need of a Savior.

Andrea: sang a solo
Matt: played the piano

And the rest of us cheered them on proudly!! :) what a talented group of kids!
Cant believe tomorrow is our day to head home! We are all packed tonight (as much as we could) so we can wake up, get breakfast and get on the road. Our projected arrival time at the church is between 4:00pm and 5pm. I will let you know as we get closer. We plan to leave as early as possible!

Thanks for your support and prayers this week! I am so excited for the youth to share all their stories with you!

Day Four- JC Rivers @ Camp

Today has been a great day so far. Our question for the day is "do you want to get well?" We will address it even further in program tonight and in small group time with our individual youth group!

This morning we were the breakfast servers! We had to be up and down stairs by 630...would you believe me if I told you all the youth were 10+ min early?? I was so proud of our group, they worked hard and with happy hearts (which can be hard when you wake up before the sun) :)

There were some of thunder storms that passed through today and the feeding many groups spent about 20 mins or so in their vehicles to escape the weather.
Other than that things went smooth as silk!

In Christ's love-

Lori

Day Three- JC Rivers @ Camp

What a great day! We all worked at our separate sites in the morning and then in the evening went to casa bonitas and the aquarium. We had a great time! Just got back in time for lights out... good night!

Monday, July 8, 2013

Day Two- JC Rivers @ Camp

We are back from our sites and have had dinner!
The youth have free time now until 730pm when we will have evening program.

Everyone had a good first day!
Today we have been talking about fears and how God is with us through everything.

We Got some sun and some of us are a little pink but I am happy to say the youth are reporting back that they are drinking lots of water and re applying sun screen through out the day.

A little change in plans for tomorrow night (our free evening). They have assigned shower times (different for youth and adult) Tomorrow the evening shower times are different and we don't have enough time to shower before the zoo so we switched things up.

We will get back from all our work sites tomorrow between 315 and 4pm, have time to shower and then head to casa Bonitas. We will stay there until about 730 then head to the Denver aquarium which is open until 9. After the aquarium we'll head back to home base, have time to get ready for bed then lights out at 11pm.
The aquarium costs a little more than the zoo, but not much.
So we have funds to cover it from the combined youth fundraising.

Below is a link to the aquarium, feel free to message, text or call if you have any questions about the change.

Blessings!

Lori

Merry Thanksgiving!

What is that you say?
Well, we are making plans for us 2nd Rivers Gathering of course!

Tentative plans are for November 26th-27th (Tuesday through Wednesday AM) @ Acorns Resort

I will look into reservations in the next couple of weeks. I believe we were in Cabin #8, I will try to reserve it, but we will see.

We can split up duties and come up with a menu later.

Since we are planning way ahead, the D.A.D. will be able to hang out with us for the whole time.

Also, we thought it would be great to exchange gifts. I know it's stinking hot out right now, but
stay with me... Even if we don't exchange gifts then, I thought it was a good idea to draw names.
I like Q's idea of staying connected with your giftee throughout the year. This is your opportunity to get to know them on a deeper level. Praying for them will empower their lives as well as your own.

Here's the Exchange List for 2013:
We have included Grandma A and Grandma G, you are free to treat them throughout the year.

Our Anniversary Day

The D.A.D. and I went to Leonardville for our
anniversary dinner.
You wonder about going to such a metropolis such
as Leonardville?
There is a eatery called Nelson's Landing. I have been wanting to go there for quite some time.

It was a beautiful drive and the food was great!

Nelson's Landing is home away from home to the parents of Jordy Nelson, a former Wildcat, now
a celebrated Green Bay Packer Wide Receiver.

Happy Anniversary Mom + Pops

Proverbs 31:10-12, 28
Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that she shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Ephesians 5:25-29
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.

Momma W and Pops,
I know we are all grateful for the example that you have been to us and others in the greater Manhattan community. Your example has not only been in your marriage, but through your walk with Christ. As your children, we are all so truly grateful to have such a powerful example and such great leaders as you two lovebirds.
I know I speak for Megan and Ashley when I say, how grateful we are that you both raised such loving, gentle, yet strong men of valor in the Rivers home. The example that you started 33 years ago has poured over into our generation, and will continue for many generations to come.

Through you, we have learned the meaning of honor, commitment, respect, and love. We have witnessed a true love story and a genuine friendship. You have honored your children, by honoring God and His Word. You have established a strong foundation for the Rivers family, we are so grateful that God allowed us to be a part. We know that the blessings our children will experience are because of the ways you have been faithful and obedient.

In a society where divorce seems to be the easy way out or a quick fix, it is with great joy that we are able to have you two be a reflection of the unbreakable bond that God designed. You are the true epitome of “happily every after...”

So, today we honor and celebrate the patriarch and matriarch of the Rivers Dynasty. We love you so much and wish you 33 more years of love, faith, laughter and joy.

Happy Anniversary!!
